Digital forensics offers with the purchase, protection, exam, research and presentation of digital proof. Networked computing, instant communications and conveyable digital units have elevated the position of electronic forensics past conventional machine crime investigations. essentially each crime now includes a few element of electronic facts; electronic forensics offers the innovations and instruments to articulate this proof. electronic forensics additionally has myriad intelligence functions. moreover, it has a necessary position in details insurance -- investigations of safety breaches yield necessary info that may be used to layout safer structures. Advances in electronic Forensics VIII describes unique learn effects and cutting edge purposes within the self-discipline of electronic forensics. furthermore, it highlights the various significant technical and criminal matters regarding electronic facts and digital crime investigations. The components of assurance comprise: subject matters and concerns, forensic innovations, cellphone forensics, cloud forensics, community forensics, and complex forensic strategies. This booklet is the 8th quantity within the annual sequence produced through the foreign Federation for info Processing (IFIP) operating crew 11.9 on electronic Forensics, a world group of scientists, engineers and practitioners devoted to advancing the cutting-edge of study and perform in electronic forensics. The e-book encompasses a collection of twenty-two edited papers from the 8th Annual IFIP WG 11.9 overseas convention on electronic Forensics, held on the college of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa within the spring of 2012. Advances in electronic Forensics VIII is a vital source for researchers, college individuals and graduate scholars, in addition to for practitioners and participants engaged in study and improvement efforts for the legislations enforcement and intelligence groups. Gilbert Peterson is an affiliate Professor of laptop Engineering on the Air strength Institute of expertise, Wright-Patterson Air strength Base, Ohio, united states. Sujeet Shenoi is the F.P. Walter Professor of computing device technology and a Professor of Chemical Engineering on the collage of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.

The study sought to examine if the EPIC process improved the analysis and presentation of large quantities of digital evidence from distributed sources. The EPIC process was compared with two other approaches. The first is a textual display visualization approach as used in industry tools such as EnCase and FTK. The second is a simple visualization approach, which incorporates representation and interaction techniques to iden- 38 ADVANCES IN DIGITAL FORENSICS VIII tify if process-driven information visualization provides advantages over user-driven visualization.
The ranking of the three approaches was based on the participants’ opinion of their effectiveness at completing tasks, familiarity compared with the participants’ previous experience with other analysis tools, and ease of learning if the approaches were to be used in the participants’ daily workflow. The familiarity and ease of learning rankings reflect the participants’ overall opinions of the learnability of the approaches. 1 Procedure The evaluation phase of the user study presented each participant with event-based data for use with each of the three approaches: textual display visualization, simple visualization and EPIC process visualiza- Osborne, Thinyane & Slay 39 tion.
