The NATO complex study Workshop on Atomic Physics with Positrons, which used to be held at college university London in the course of 15-18 July 1987, was once the fourth assembly in a sequence dedicated to the overall subject matter of positron colli sions in gases. prior conferences were held at York college, Toronto (1981); Royal Holloway collage, Egham (1983) and Wayne country Uni versity, Detroit (1985). contemporary very major advancements in positron beam currents, as a result of improvement of extra effective moderators and using extra severe positron assets, are making attainable an more and more subtle variety of experiments in atomic collision physics. while many years in the past in basic terms overall scattering pass sections should be made up our minds, measurements can now be made from numerous partial and differential go sections. severe positron beams also are getting used to supply positronium beams and already, as said the following, initial investigations were made from collisions of positronium with numerous aim platforms. those experimental advancements have inspired, and been motivated through, regular, if a bit much less spectacu1ar,progress in linked theoretical experiences. either points of the sector are good represented in those continue ings.

Elastic DCS measurements of Smith et al. (Ref. 17) compared with calculations of McEachran and Stauffer (Ref. 7) (- -), and Nahar and Wadehra (Ref. 8) ( - ) . Each theoretical "curve" consists merely of straight line segments joining discrete points. 32 DCS measurements were made at a fixed angle of 45 0 while varying the positron energy from 6 to 40 eV with our results normalized to the calculation of McEachran and Stauffer at 40 eVe It is seen that our measurements tend to be in better agreement with the calculation of Nahar and Wadehra.

Bielefeld University group (9 species of hydrocarbons 9 ) and our group (N2 0, COlO, C0210, CH47, C2H211, C2H47, C2H67, H2012, NH313, C6H6, CF4l4 and SiH414) do not lead to a simple and definite conclusion. 2. 1 TOTAL CROSS SECTION MEASUREMENTS Outline of the Experimental Method and Procedure 7 ,10 Total cross sections (TCS) were measured using a beam transmission technique. The TCS is obtained from the equation I g (1) where Iv and Ig are net counts obtained after subtracting the accidental coincidences in the vacuum and the gas runs, n is the target-gas number density in the collision cell and 1 is the effective length of the cell.
