As at December 1996 there were 44 morning, 45 afternoon and 23 full-time children, who remained at the school until the term after they reached the age of five. Since Bridge was a local authority nursery school in its own right it did not have a specific catchment area and was able to feed into a number of local lower schools. At the time of the research the proportion of ethnic minority children, including those with English as an additional language, was approximately 50%. The school's staffing consisted of the headteacher, the deputy headteacher, two further teachers, three nursery nurses and a Section 11 assistant who was a Panjabi speaker.
We argue that such children are inducted not only into a general pupil role, as are many pupils, but into one based on an anglicised model which fails to take their own background cultures fully into account. The new identity becomes designated in the ritual of registration, based on English custom, which checks presence, marks pupilhood, reminds continually and establishes formality. A different status is attached to play (a child's activity) and to work (a pupil's activity), a distinction which inhibits bilingual children in particular.
